About Twenty Twenty
Twenty Twenty dropped in September 2019 and it's where Djo started. Joe Keery had played guitar in Post Animal, and this was the first record under his own project. He teased it with a dark photo captioned "tomorrow" in July, then put out Roddy. Chateau (Feel Alright) and Mortal Projections followed before the album.
He wrote every song himself and played most of what you hear - guitars, bass, drums, synths and percussion - and engineered and mixed it too. Adam Thein, who'd become his producer on everything after, added keyboards, backing vocals and some of the mixing, and Heba Kadry mastered it. Colin Croom plays drums on Flash Mountain.
It's psychedelic rock and psych-pop, in the same family as Tame Impala. NME gave it four stars and said it filled the gap while everyone waited on Tame Impala's next record. Personal Lies has a tightly wound groove, Tentpole Shangrila has a wonky, circus-like bounce, and Chateau (Feel Alright) is the sweet love song.
It's a cult favorite, not a hit album, but it's picked up chart spots years later. In 2023 it reached number 7 on Billboard's Tastemaker Albums chart and number 24 on the Vinyl Albums chart.
There are 12 songs and no deluxe edition, so it's about three minutes. Rank it, then try DECIDE and see how far he moved in three years.
