Superbloom Song Sorter

About Superbloom

Superbloom dropped on October 23, 2020, his first album on his own. 5SOS had just put out CALM and then the pandemic cancelled everything, so he called it "the perfect chance for me to make some music on my own, test my songwriting ability." He'd started writing that February.

He made it at home in Los Angeles with his friend and housemate Matt Pauling, who co-wrote and co-produced every track. In his words they "just went in every day for maybe four months and just crushed it." The drums were recorded in the basement, and he sang full takes instead of chopping and tuning the vocals. He's named My Bloody Valentine, Nine Inch Nails, Elliott Smith and Silverchair among what he was listening to, and you can hear the '90s all over it.

Skinny Skinny was the first single. It's about body image, and it came from a conversation with his younger brother - he'd "never confronted" the subject in a song before. Have U Found What Ur Looking For? was the first track they made. Scar is about his family, and he's called it his favourite. The Sweetness runs past six minutes, and it's about depression: "You don't have to exist in that pit of depression for your entire life."

It went to number 37 in Australia. A week after it came out he played the whole album in Superbloom: A Live Concert Film, with Heart-Shaped Box thrown in, and the live album followed that November.
