About Hold the Girl
Hold the Girl dropped on September 16, 2022, two weeks later than planned because of "production issues". She wrote it in 2020 and 2021 with Paul Epworth, Stuart Price, Clarence Clarity and Lauren Aquilina, and the title is a phrase from her own therapy about looking after her inner child. She's said Taylor Swift's Folklore changed how she approached writing.
This Hell came first, in May, a country-pop song with glam-rock riffs that answers the rolling back of minority rights. Catch Me in the Air is about her mum, a single parent. Your Age is one of the heavier songs on it, and in a 2023 BBC interview she said she was groomed by a teacher at 17, which shaped the lyrics. Phantom, Hurricanes and Frankenstein were also singles.
It went to number three in the UK with 13,961 first-week sales, the highest ever for a Japanese-born solo artist there, and number one in Scotland. It also became her first Billboard 200 entry. Metacritic gives it an 84.
In December 2023 a bonus edition added Imagining, with Amaarae, and Flavour Of The Month. Fifteen songs with those on, about four minutes. Compare with SAWAYAMA.
