About Preacher’s Daughter
Preacher’s Daughter dropped on May 12, 2022. She wrote and produced it over about four years, with Matthew Tomasi co-producing some of it, and the first version came to roughly two and a half hours. It started as an idea about angels before she wrote A House In Nebraska in a day and it turned into something else. Strangers took her about ten minutes. Thelma & Louise was a starting point for Thoroughfare.
It's a concept album about a character, Ethel, set in the 1991 American South. She's the daughter of a preacher and runs away from her family and church, and the album deals with abuse, violence and death. She's described it as the first part of a planned trilogy. Ptolemaea takes its name from a ring of Dante's Inferno. Gibson Girl, Strangers and American Teenager were the singles, and American Teenager has since gone RIAA Gold.
The vinyl, which was delayed from January to April 2025, was what finally got it on the charts. It debuted at number ten on the Billboard 200 and number ten in the UK, and went to number one on Top Album Sales, making her the first openly trans artist with a US top ten album. Metacritic gives it an 82.
Thirteen songs, about three minutes. Rank it next to Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You, the prequel.
