About Planet Her

Planet Her dropped on June 25, 2021, and it's the one where everything hit. She wrote half of it in Hawaii in early 2019 after a breakup, and recorded most of it in lockdown, much of it at Y2K's home studio. The idea was a planet that's "the center of the universe", where "all species can kind of be in harmony". And no, it's not a statement: "It's just Planet Her, for girls."

Her engineer said every harmony, every vocal stack and every character voice on it was her idea, "100%". Kiss Me More with SZA borrows from Olivia Newton-John's Physical - "I wanted to make a song about kissing. I just thought it would be cute." You Right started out as a solo song. She played The Weeknd something else first that didn't work, then she played him You Right and "he was obsessed with it". Get Into It (Yuh) is a love letter to Nicki - "Thank you Nicki, I love you!" - and Nicki later said Doja asked her to jump on it, but she didn't think she could make it any better.

The hits kept coming for a year. Kiss Me More spent 19 weeks in the top ten, a record for a female collaboration, and won her first Grammy. Need To Know went top ten. Then a TikTok dance sent Woman to number seven, almost a year after the album came out. Ain't Shit went to 24 without ever being a single.

It debuted at number two and stayed there for three weeks straight, and it was the tenth best-selling album in the world that year. It was nominated for Album of the Year too. The deluxe came two days later, with Up And Down, Tonight with Eve, Ride and Why Why.

With the deluxe tracks it's 18 songs, about five minutes. Good luck leaving Woman out of your top three.
