nostalgia, ULTRA. Song Sorter

About nostalgia, ULTRA.

nostalgia, ULTRA. is where it starts. He'd signed a writing deal with Def Jam, felt the label was ignoring him, and made a mixtape on his own instead. He put it out for free on his Tumblr on 16 February 2011, with no promotion at all. He's said Hurricane Katrina, which hit his hometown of New Orleans, and his move to Los Angeles afterwards were behind it.

Happy Perez, Tricky Stewart, Midi Mafia and James Fauntleroy were among the producers, and he borrowed a lot. Strawberry Swing is a Coldplay cover, Nature Feels is built on MGMT's Electric Feel, and Lovecrimes has Nicole Kidman's lines from Eyes Wide Shut in it. The short interludes are named after video games and come with cassette player sounds. There Will Be Tears is for his grandfather, who died in 2010.

American Wedding is his take on Hotel California. In 2012 he wrote on Tumblr that the Eagles' side had threatened to sue if he performed it again, while Don Henley's spokesman said Henley hadn't threatened any legal action. Frank's answer was that he hadn't made a dime off it and was "paying homage". The song was later taken off the release.

Novacane was his first single and got to number 82 on the Hot 100, and the Swim Good video picked up three VMA nominations. Def Jam planned to put out a shorter version called Nostalgia, Lite, but he called it off, saying the American Wedding sample had "no chance in hell of being cleared". The Guardian later put the mixtape at number 41 on its list of the best albums of the century.

It's 14 songs and about three minutes. Only Novacane and Swim Good have previews. Then try channel ORANGE and hear how fast he moved.
