About After School

After School came out on September 25, 2020, as the deluxe edition of K-12, but it's a whole different thing. "The EP is much more personal and steps outside of the Cry Baby character box for a moment, which I've yet to do," she said. "I've never put out music that is so personal." She called it "the transitional puzzle piece" between K-12 and whatever came next.

Michael Keenan produced the first six songs, and Blake Slatkin did The Bakery. Brain & Heart borrows the melody of Jennifer Lopez's If You Had My Love - "I just kept hearing that melody in my head over the track." Test Me is her favorite, "because it has a dichotomy of darkness and hope." Numbers is about how artists are taught to believe "we are only valuable when we are producing", and Notebook says it straight: "If someone is willing to risk losing you, they don't value you."

The Bakery is about a bakery job she had in high school to pay for her art - "I didn't work there for even a month" - and she storyboarded its video herself on an iPad.

Seven songs, about a minute. Test Me is her pick, and I think it's the right one.
