Cry Baby Song Sorter

About Cry Baby

Cry Baby dropped on August 14, 2015, and it's the first part of the story. She was "teased as a kid for being super emotional", and making the character let her "throw it all onto Cry Baby" instead. "Cry Baby is me, technically, so I can't really get rid of her." She directed and styled the whole thing herself, every video included, and the CD came with a storybook.

Kinetics & One Love made most of it with her, the same team as Dollhouse. Babydaddy from Scissor Sisters produced Training Wheels, and she wrote Pity Party with Kara DioGuardi on top of Lesley Gore's It's My Party. DioGuardi said her voice reminded her of Judy Garland, and Melanie "really wanted to write about no one showing up to my birthday party."

Dollhouse leads straight into Sippy Cup - "what actually 'goes down in the kitchen'". Soap is about a crush she was too scared to tell how she felt, so she "washed my mouth out with soap." Training Wheels is "my only love song on the album." Mrs. Potato Head is about plastic surgery and learning to accept yourself, and she's called it "my favorite song I've ever written." In Tag, You're It she gets kidnapped, and in Milk and Cookies she poisons him and escapes - things, she pointed out, she hasn't actually been through.

It debuted at number six with about 40,000 units and stayed on the Billboard 200 for 104 weeks in a row. The videos tell one continuous story, all the way to Mad Hatter in 2017. The deluxe has Play Date, Teddy Bear and Cake. Play Date blew up on TikTok in April 2020, five years later, thanks to a Timothée Chalamet edit, and it hit on her birthday. She called it the "best birthday present ever."

With the deluxe tracks it's 16 songs, about four minutes. Mrs. Potato Head in the top five or we riot.
