Blurryface dropped on May 17, 2015, two days earlier than planned. They wrote it on the road while touring Vessel, and the whole album is built around one character. Tyler wears black paint on his neck and hands to play him, and he's said Blurryface stands for "all the things that I as an individual - but also everyone around me - am insecure about." It "helped to give those doubts a name, a face and a seat at the table."

Ricky Reed produced most of it, Mike Elizondo did Stressed Out, Polarize, Hometown and Not Today, and The Judge was recorded in London with Mike Crossey. Josh sings backing vocals on Tear in My Heart, The Judge and Not Today.

Stressed Out is sung as Blurryface - "my name's Blurryface and I care what you think" - and Elizondo admitted he didn't get the hook at first. It went to number two, behind Love Yourself, and it was the first rock song ever to pass a billion streams on Spotify. Tear in My Heart is for Jenna, and the bridge came to Tyler while she slept on a long drive home. Lane Boy is where he says he "broke character". Goner is the oldest song on the album, and there's a 2012 version where he plays accordion.

It went straight to number one, their first, with 147,000 units, and it won their only Grammy, for Stressed Out. In 2018 it became the first album where every song had gone at least gold, and Hometown was the last one to get there. Then in 2025 a demo of Doubt went viral on TikTok, ten years later, and they put it out.
