About Scaled And Icy

Scaled And Icy dropped on May 21, 2021, and it was made in the pandemic, though you'd never guess. Tyler wrote and produced most of it in his home studio in Columbus, and Josh recorded his drums from LA. "I knew the record could go one of two ways," Tyler told NME, and he picked escape over doom. Officially the title means "scaled back and isolated". It's also an anagram of "Clancy is dead". They've never confirmed it and never denied it.

Shy Away was the first single. Tyler wrote it for his youngest brother, Jay, as "a tutorial on how to operate a recording studio", and you can hear his daughter cooing in it. It spent eight weeks at number one on alternative radio. Saturday has Jenna on a phone call in the bridge - she wanted to re-record it, and he kept the original. Formidable is another one for her.

Redecorate closes it. It came from a friend whose son had died, and whose family left his room exactly as he'd left it. Tyler later said it was a deliberate hint at the darker record he wanted to make next. That record was Clancy.

They launched it with a livestream from Value City Arena in Columbus on release day, which was a big deal coming from "anti-livestream advocates". In the lore, it's Dema propaganda - the Christmas Saves The Year cover had a gift on it marked "SAI is propaganda". It went to number three and won Top Rock Album at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards.
